Homemade Butter

Who knew making your own butter was so easy and fun! Plus it's delicious!
Cook Time 30 minutes
Servings 3 sticks

Equipment

  • Mixer with whisk attachment

Ingredients

  • 32 oz Heavy Whipping Cream I love Kroger brand
  • Flaky salt

Instructions

  • Add 32 oz of cold Heavy Whipping Cream to stand mixer with the whisk attachment. You can also do a hand mixer with the whisk attachment.
  • Mix the Heavy Whipping Cream for 20-25 minutes, or until the butter separates from the buttermilk. The cream will go through a few stages before getting to this.
  • When the cream gets a lot of liquid, I recommend placing a dish towel over the mixer so it doesn't splatter everywhere
  • Once the butter is formed, strain the buttermilk into a jar. Seal the jar with a lid and place the buttermilk in the fridge. It's yummy!
  • Fill a clean bowl with fresh cold water
  • Place the butter in the water and start rinsing. You want to squeeze the butter several times and try to remove as much buttermilk as possible. This will help the butter last longer
  • Remove the dirty water and refill with fresh water and ice. Repeat the rinsing process. The ice helps chill the butter, making it easier to shape and cut.
  • Place the clean butter on parchment paper and shape. I like to form a long rectangle and then slice into individual sticks.
  • Add flaky salt to the top of the butter. This is optional, but the salt really adds some flavor! You could even add herbs or honey.
  • You can leave the butter on the counter in a sealed container or in the fridge or freezer. The butter will last around a week left out, two weeks in the fridge, and several months in the freezer
  • When freezing, I like to wrap my butter sticks in parchment paper and place in a ziplock bag.
  • You can make buttermilk pancakes with your buttermilk! They are yummy! Or use it for other baking.
